Your Oven is an Investment: Care for It Well

If you love to bake like me, then your oven is the most important kitchen tool you have. Even though many avid home-bakers realize this, I think we tend to neglect our ovens. I have to admit that other than wiping it off, I never properly cleaned my oven like I should have. I learned the hazard of not caring for your oven properly when one of the burning coils caught fire one day and stopped working after that. I was grateful the small fire went out quickly, but I was so worried that my beloved oven was going to have to be replaced. I was ecstatic to find out that local repair shop could fix it quickly just be replacing the coil. I created this blog to remind others to care for their appliances properly. With just an occasional repair, an oven can last for many years.

Does Your Refrigerator Have Warm Spots? What You Should Do

If your refrigerator has warm spots, it could be because of a number of different reasons, including your door seal. If your door seal is broken or is cracked in any way, it could cause warm air to get inside and could cause your food to get too warm and no longer be safe to eat. If you have found that you have warm spots in your refrigerator, you should hire a professional appliance repairman to repair your refrigerator for you, as you could have other issues as well. Read on for some things you may be able to do yourself in order to make the repair yourself.

Replace The Door Seal

Replace the door seal in your refrigerator, especially if it has dry rot, has missing screws that hold it in place, has cracked, or isn't holding enough of a seal to keep the air out of the refrigerator. To replace the door seal, you need to remove the old seal by taking out the screws that are holding it in place. Then clean the area where the old door seal was located using alcohol wipes. Dry it thoroughly before installing the new door seal. Install the new door seal made for your specific brand and model of refrigerator, then use the new screws to hold the new door seal in place. Test the new seal by placing a piece of paper inside the door and closing it. Try to pull the paper out from the door. If it comes out easily, it is not sealing properly. If it is difficult to remove, you have a proper seal.

Remove Food From In Front Of The Vents

Remove food from in front of the vents inside your refrigerator. These vents allow the airflow inside of your refrigerator to move freely, so the cool air is going to be even in your refrigerator. You need to remove the food in front of the vents to prevent those hot spots in the refrigerator.

Clean The Coils

Clean the coils at the back or the bottom of the refrigerator and remove the dust and debris from the refrigerator. Clogged coils can result in warm spots in the refrigerator, so you need to be sure to keep them clean. Vacuum the coils every couple of months or more often if you have a lot of dust and dander in your home.

If your refrigerator has warm spots, you should hire a professional appliance repairman to make the necessary repairs for you to prevent food loss.
